Description of the Course

Course description

Have you tried Canyoning and now you want to learn to be more autonomous?

Our course consists of a mix of online learning and onsite teaching so you get the most out of your time with your instructors.

Western Canyoning Adventure and West Coast Canyoning have collaborated to offer you the expertise of two of the Canyoning industry leaders in Western Canada. Together, we’ve selected the most up-to-date gear and techniques from Europe and North America to manage the specific canyon conditions found here in Canada.

We use the American Canyoneering Association (ACA) and the Canyon Guide International (CGI) as standards.

Dates & schedule

May and September: Check our calendar, but we can run up to one course per week with enough participants.

Rest of the summer: Available upon request and depending on the availabilities of our instructors. Book ahead, Summers are busy!

We can adapt the schedule if you book a course with a large enough group. Please contact us if there are no availabilities on the dates you want.

Location

April – May = The Okanagan. We have several training sites within one hour of Kelowna BC

Why the Okanagan?

Similar to rock climbing, this area is one of the first areas in Canada to be accessible for canyoning. It’s a good mid-point between the Rockies and the West Coast and a great way to discover new canyons with different geology and features! Get an early start on your canyoning season by learning new skills!

The rest of the summer = The Rockies, the Okanagan and the Lower Mainland. Please contact us for any training during the summer in these locations. We have a wide range of training sites!

Levels

This course format is available for the two following levels:

Canyoning core skills = Become a safe participant in an organized group.

You will learn: all about rappelling in water, the basics of swiftwater swimming, down- climbing, sliding and jumping, group communication, understanding of rigging and trip planning.

The goal is for you to become comfortable in the canyon environment and have basic rope progression skills as well as understanding all the risks involved and the ability to make judgements about whether or not a canyon or team are appropriate for you.

Technical canyoning = to make you a reliable canyoning team member.

You will learn the basics of rigging for canyoning, belays, trip planning and group management as a team.

The goal is for you to be able to plan your trips, inspect the equipment, rig and manage a group at the same skill level.

Note: We don’t limit your learning curve to a skills checklist. We are happy to advance the checklist if the group is willing and able to adapt.

We can organize training for Canyoning recreational and professional leaders in a more customized format. Please contact us!

Why take training?

Canyons mix both the vertical and the aquatic world in a very committing environment. The use of ropes in swift water requires specific gear and techniques to travel safely in this environment. Most accidents that happened when the sport boomed in Europe came from the use of traditional rock climbing rappelling gear and techniques. Today, Canyoning is a sport on its own.

Would you start ski touring without proper avalanche training!?

Help us to grow a strong, safe and sustainable Canyoning community in Canada!
